TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Police have allowed the public to hold ngabuburit and suhoor (predawn meals) on the road during Ramadan. However, the police appealed such events to be held safely without disturbing the environment.

“Of course if it’s for a good cause then it’s allowed,” Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono asserted today, May 17. “But we ban the racing, brawl, and loud music as that disturb other people.”

Ngabuburit is a local term for the activities of people during the dusk to wait for the time to break the fast in Ramadan. Meanwhile, suhoor on the road is the activities done on the road ahead of suhoor time or nowadays, people use the term as a reason to organize convoys on public streets during suhoor.

The police, said Argo, will monitor the hours before fast-breaking time until suhoor. The Jakarta Police itself will deploy some 300 officers to manage the traffic during peak hours. “We will add more 20 percent personnel,” said Jakarta Police’s Traffic Directorate Sr. Comr. Yusuf today.

Argo asserted the police will not prohibit ngabuburit and sahur on the road event during the Ramadan so long the activities not disturbing the social orders among the community.
