Merapi Hiking Route Temporarily Closed after Phreatic Eruption

TEMPO.CO, Boyolali - Mount Merapi National Park in Central Java, is closed for hiking for an undetermined time limit after the phreatic eruption with a height of 5,500 meters from the top of the crater occurred on Friday, May 11.
Samsuri, a member of SAR Barameru, Boyolali, informed that the hiking route to Merapi's peak crater is closed temporarily. There will be no hiking activity in the meantime.

According to Samsuri, there were around 160 hikers that had been evacuated. Several hikers are slightly injured and in a traumatic state, but they are all safe.
The spokesperson of National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) in Boyolali, Bambang Sinung, also stated that all hikers in the Merapi's Pasar Bubrah area were already evacuated.
“All hikers had been evacuated from Pasar Bubrah. They are all safe. Eight hikers were slightly injured but they've received treatment from the medical team,” he said.

The hikers, Samsuri added, were panic and immediately ran from the site when Merapi's peak crater spewed the volcanic ashes.
