Adisucipto Airport Temporarily Closed on Mount Merapi`s Eruption

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Adisucipto Airport in Yogyakarta will be temporarily closed following Mount Merapi's eruption that spewed volcanic ash into the sky on May 11.
“The volcanic ash has affected several places, especially regions located at the southern and southwest of Mount Merapi,” said National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.
Angkasa Pura Corporate Communications Denoan Rinaldi said the Adisucipto Airport’s aerodrome had been officially suspended from flight activities since 10:42 Western Indonesian Time this morning. “The aerodrome is still closed, we’re still waiting for further notice,” said Deno through a text message.

Sutopo added there had been no ensuing eruption and that the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) had yet to record any sign of aftershock.
The volcanic ash from Mount Merapi's eruption has affected several locations in the Sleman regency, such as Tempel, Turi, Pakem, Cangkringan, Ngemplak, Jombor, Ngaglik, Godean, Depok, and Gamping districts. The volcanic ash can also be seen falling over regions in Yogyakarta, including at Tugu Train Station, Bumijo, Malioboro, Gamping, and Timoho.
