TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Agus Yuda is a truck driver that walked more than 700 kilometers from Mojokerto to Jakarta in his attempt to meet President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). The president held a meeting with the country’s truck drivers at the State Palace in Jakarta today, May 8.
Agus’ journey from Mojokerto took 26 days to accomplish, which resulted in him being granted personal time with Jokowi after the meeting ended. “The reason I walked is not merely to create a sensation. But there is a deeper meaning; [requesting] for better land transportation in Indonesia,” said the trucker after an eye-to-eye meeting with the President.
He addressed to the president regarding the problems often encountered by truck drivers which are the numerous extortions and the criminal nature of some people.
According to Agus, Jokowi will follow-up his aspirations by coordinating with the country’s transportation agency and the Indonesian Police.
“What we demand from the government is to provide us with a sense of comfort and security in distributing goods. Since we are the government’s backbone. Without us, distributions will not reach the people,” said the trucker.
Furthermore, Jokowi said that he has listened to the truckers and will follow it up.
