TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An observer of international relations Hoppi Yoon said North to South Korea area is one of the economic centers in the Northeast Asia region. If the infrastructure develops and connected, both North Korea and South Korea might get a huge benefit for their countries.
"For example, when the North and South railways are connected, the Japanese can travel to Europe through this route," Hoppi told Tempo via email on Saturday, April 28.
The lecturer at President University, Cikarang argued that China, Japan, and South Korea could reduce the logistics costs by using the railway train, instead of ships.
Furthermore, the peace on the Korean Peninsula is also profitable for Russia by utilizing the pipelines that cross the regions to send oil and gas to South Korea and Japan.
As reported by Reuters and Korea Herald, South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korea's top leader Kim Jong Un signed the Panmunjom Declaration on Peace, Prosperity, and Unification of the Korean Peninsula on Friday, April 27, 2018.
Moon and Kim together planted pine trees as a symbol of peace between the two countries, which over the past 65 years have often disputed over North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile tests.
