TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - There is many destinations in Solo in Central Java that travellers can visit. The attraction of President Jokowi’s hometown is getting more-and-more engrained in traveller’s radar following the many tourist spot it has.

Here are five facts about Solo you need to know before visiting the region which is geographically close to Indonesia’s other renowned tourist location, Yogyakarta.

1. Solo, the Batik city

You would be overwhelmed by the many Batik that you will potentially encounter during your trip in Solo, whether it be at the mall or traditional markets. There are also other alternative batik centers such as Kampung Batik Laweyan or Kampung Batik Kauman, where both places offer batik products sold in private residencies that have transformed into batik galleries.

2. Culturally-rich city

Don’t be too surprised once you visit Solo upon the many cultural events that is often held there. This is traced back to the people’s closeness to its traditional customs. This is also driven by the fact that many artists live in the region, and has well-maintained the region’s roots to its past culture.

3. Solo the petite city

No need to worry of not being able to decide the spots you plan on visiting considering that Solo or Surakarta is geographically just 44 square kilometers that is flanked in its four sides that borders with Karanganyar District, Boyolali District, and Sukoharjo District, which has five sub-districts.

4. The popular saying ‘Solo Princess’

This typical nickname for women from Solo is identical to grace and gentleness, either in words or behavior. It represents conformity towards existing rules and politeness. The application towards daily life nowadays may differ from the past, but its essence can still be felt in Solo’s women.

5. Top-notch culinary options

Just like Yogyakarta that is popular with its Gudeg and Bakpia, then Solo is known for its Serabi (rice flour with coconut milk pancake). But other culinary feats that are closely-knit to Solo are the liwet rice, tengkleng, timlo, and many more.
