7 Criminal Cases Involving Online Taxi Driver in 2016-2018

TEMPO.CO, Depok - Head of Subdirectorate of People`s Transport at the Transportation Ministry, Syafrin Liputo, said the presence of online-based transportation (online taxi) today, in addition to providing convenience for the public also causing to new anxiety, one of them is the criminal act.

Syafrin said, during 2016 to 2018, his office recorded seven prominent cases conducted by online taxi drivers toward the passengers. "The case is divided into three classifications: extortion, sexual abuse, and murder," Syafrin Liputo told Tempo on Thursday, April 26.

1. The first case occurred in December 2016, when an online taxi driver molested a passenger; an underage girl.

2. The second case occurred in July 2017, a driver named Riyan Arterino (27) extorted a student with initials NS in Pondok Rumput area, Bogor.

3. Another extortion toward an online taxi passenger reoccurred in August 2017.

4. On January 17, 2018, in Bandung, a woman named Mega Anisa was robbed and sexually abused.

5. In Semarang, Central Java, a Grabcar dirver killed the passenger on January 20, 2018.

6. The sixth case was in Bekasi. On February 12, 2018, a passenger from Bekasi who went to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport was taken to a lonely place by the driver and was then sexually abused.

7. The seventh was the recent case of murder toward an online taxi passenger, Yun Siska Rochani (29) on March 18, 2018.

Following the number of cases, Syafrin Liputo revealed that his office still continues to encourage the Regulation of the Transportation Minister which would require the companies of online app-based transportation providers (applicators) to become transportation companies.
