TEMPO.CO, Manado - Deputy chairman of North Sumatra`s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) said that the plan to block Facebook in Indonesia will certainly harm the country`s micro, small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

“We refuse to have Facebook blocked, large numbers of SMEs have utilized the social media platform to promote and market their businesses,” said Ivanry, North Sumatra’s Kadin deputy chairman today, April 19.

According to Ivanry, the Facebook closure might introduce new problems for SMEs that often use Facebook as their trading platform. “Facebook is now a platform that creates millions of entrepreneurs in Indonesia, especially North Sumatra. I disagree if Facebook gets blocked,” he continued.

Furthermore, Ivanry maintained that despite its positives and negatives, Facebook is a social media tool that cannot be avoided in today’s digital and globalization era.

“We need to anticipate its weakness and negative effects, while at the same time improving all the positive things. Admittedly, Facebook has been very helpful for SMEs to improve,” he continued.

However, Ivanry said that the KADIN appreciates what has been done by the Indonesian government through the Communication and Informatics Ministry upon the Facebook fiasco.
