TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The talks of a Facebook moratorium have emerged in the hearing between Facebook management and House of Representatives (DPR)`s Commission I.
House member Meutya Hafid said that the discourse is an open suggestion that will be carried out by DPR to the government if Facebook fails to fulfill its promise in investigating the data abuse by Cambridge Analytica.
“Until there is a more thorough improvement, I think it’s not taboo for the government to conduct a moratorium,” said Meutya.

Furthermore, Commission I Deputy Chairman Hanafi Rais said that he will summon the Communication and Informatics Ministry to further discuss the matter with Facebook. “Whether the government will hand out a legal sanction or other kinds of sanctions, it will be decided by the government,” said Hanafi.
Meanwhile, DPR member Evita Nursanti said that it would be regrettable if Facebook gets shut down considering that the social media platform has proven to provide many benefits for the public. However, she urged Facebook to be able to guarantee the DPR and Indonesian government that the social media giant is neutral and must not be misused by third-party companies.
“This is the regional election year, next year is the presidential election. How will you able to reassure us?” said Evita.
