UNESCO Recognizes Mt. Rinjani as National Geopark

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) officially recognized Mount Rinjani in West Nusa Tenggara as a global geopark site on Thursday, April 12, 2018.

"Alhamdulillah [Praise to Allah] I just received the news that the Unesco executive board had recognized Geopark Rinjani as the latest member of its Unesco Global Geopark," said Rinjani Geopark General Manager Chairul Mahsul on Saturday, April 14, 2018.

Mount Rinjani is a part of the Mount Rinjani National Park (TNGR) that encapsulates four districts throughout the Lombok Island starting from North Lombok District, West Lombok, Central Lombok, and East Lombok.

One of the park's main attractions is the Segara Anak Lake located 2,010 meters above sea level, which is partially located within the 3,726 meter-high Mount Rinjani.

Mount Rinjani's recognition as a Global Geopark follows the steps of Bali's Batur Caldera and Yogyakarta's Mount Sewu that have previously been recognized as Unesco's global geopark. ANTARA
