TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The beginning of this year's mountain climbing season was marked by a rather unpleasant event. A Slovak climber Andrey Voytech (39) was found dead on Mount Merbabu on Saturday, April 7, 2018. Andrey was reported missing since Friday, March 30, 2018.

The victim was suspected to die from a 13-meters drop," said Chief of the Central Java Search and Rescue Agency Noer Isrodin Muchlisin on Saturday, April 7, 2018.

Mountain climbing has always been an exciting and challenging activity for climbers. The activity is somewhat extreme considering the possible risks. Especially, if the climber was unprepared.

Here are several tips on mountain climbing quoted from various sources that can be taken to minimize the risk of accidents or fatality, and to make mountain climbing enjoyable.

1. Personal security
Make sure to bring along complete supplies, including logistics (foods and drinks), thick jackets, and drugs for climbers who suffered from certain illness.

2. Fill out forms properly
At the beginning of a climbing path, climbers usually stop at there is a registration post. Climbers should sign up and schedule the climbing. The registration will allow officials to monitor all the climbers.

3. Do not panic and stay together
Do not panic if thick fog comes. Climbers climbing in groups should stay together even during stops, or as they continue the ascend. If there is an emergency, contact base camp immediately.

4. Bring a power bank
Although there is no internet signal in the mountains, power bank is needed to keep the phone alive just in case climbers lost directions.

5. Light but useful
Bring enough logistics and provide plenty of space for high-nutritious foods, such as oats, brown rice, bread, honey, and dates.

6. Good friends, good path
Fun companions combined with fun climbing paths is non-negotiable. Choose a climbing path that suits your needs and capabilities.
