TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The southeast city of China, Hong Kong, held the biggest art event dubbed Arts Month in March 2018. This world-class exhibition succeeded to attract 86 percent of millennial tourists having the vacation in the country.
Various paintings and artworks were uniquely displayed. Many tourists loved to save the view in a photograph. While some were seen taking a selfie with the art collections as the background.
However, there are some things to keep in mind before taking a picture in art gallery or museum. A storygrapher or photographer, as well as a storyteller Alexander Thian, explained six important points visitors should understand in getting a photograph.
1. Several museum or gallery may not allow the visitor to take a pic
Alexander Thian or AT suggested to first look into the rules displayed in the building. The reason is, usually, several museums and galleries prohibit the visitor from taking a picture. “Several museums ban any kind of photography to let the visitors fully enjoy the art,” said AT when met at Morrisey Hotel, Kebon Sirih, Central Jakarta, on Monday, March 2.
2. Take selfie moderately
AT explained many visitors have an annoying habit which disturbs other people. “Take a selfie from different angles and block out the art to be seen by other people is bothersome,” he said. Other than coming to the event to take some pictures, visitors also want to enjoy the creative works.
3. Using Audio Guide
AT suggested visitors know the story behind of the artwork by listening to the audio guide provided. By understanding the story, the picture will come out lively. “Because you’ll know the whole story,” he said.
4. Sense of scale
A sense of scale is related to the people who see your photos of the artworks. “Take a picture by involving a person within your frame, so people will know the size of the artworks,” AT explained.
5. Keep the photo for yourself
Taking a picture of artwork such as paintings to make its replica is not allowed and the perpetrator may face a legal suit. Thus, a photograph of an artwork is better kept as a private collection.
6. Talking with the curator
Other than using the audio guide, visitors can learn the meaning behind of an artwork by talking with the curator. The curator will explain the creator or artist, the background process of an artwork, and the reason it is displayed.
By having a conversation with the curator, your knowledge of the artwork will broaden. “It is the same when I take a pic, I tell the story of it. And when I re-tell it, I will have the material for my story,” said Alexander Thian.
