TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Film Day which fell on March 30 has become the concern of the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) since Indonesian film is lacking with the children-friendly genre.
The KPAI Chairman Susanto stated the society, especially children, find that film as an entertainment media and they are very enthusiastic to watch it. Unfortunately, the most watched movie is mostly contained adult or teenage content.
KPAI recorded throughout 2016 and 2017, there were 32 films with 9,6 million viewer and 27 films with 15,3 million viewers, respectively. As in 2017, the 15 most hit films within the country were Pengabdi Setan, Ayat-ayat Cinta, Surga Yang Tak Dirindukan, and others.

“We need innovation in the film to educate the public since there are many reports of child abuse in various sector. For example about bullying, violence, pornography, sexual or drugs abuse,” Susanto noted in a written statement, Thursday, March 29.
Susanto further explained the public expectation to the movie is likely high. Not only to entertain the public, but the movie must also be educative to protect the children, especially since the number of children in Indonesia is predicted at 87 million. Thus the children are highly susceptible to fall into the victim of negative content from the film and they are potential to be the perpetrator as well.
“This is the challenge, and also the chance for us. We expected in this National Film Day, all the people in the film industry, either the artist, the filmmaker, and the film industry are encouraged to present a children-friendly movie,” said Susanto.
