TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan stated one-hour power outage succeeded to record positive achievements during 2018 Jakarta Earth Hour campaign.
"The results have increased from the previous year," said Anies at Jakarta City Hall, Saturday, March 24, during the closing ceremony at 22:00 local times. The City Hall was one of the kick-off locations of the campaign this year. A number of environmental communities had joined to enliven the event.
The state-owned Electricity Company (PLN) Distribution Jakarta reported the campaign has saved electricity up to 170 megawatts or about Rp249 million and the amount of carbon emission reduced up to 122 tons of CO2 (carbon dioxide).
In Earth Hour 2017, the electricity load saved 157 MegaWatt only or about Rp127 million with the carbon emissions reduced by 112 tons of CO2.
Earth Hour is a campaign initiated by the World Wide Fund for Nature. 2018 remarked the 11th saving campaign movement following the first launch in 2007 in Sydney, Australia.
Anies assessed Earth Hour 2018 could be a trigger of electricity saving habits among Jakarta society. Electricity consumption in Jakarta, he argued, is greater than the total consumption in Sumatera Island. Unfortunately, Anies said, some people still at an extravagant usage of electricity.
Anies Baswedan promised to solve the condition including encourage office buildings to obtain green building certificates (Greenship). "If there is a breakthrough movement in another place, we will try to apply it in Jakarta," he said.
