Public Responds to Plan of 451 Trees Removal in Sudirman-Thamrin

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The plan of Sudirman-Thamrin street revamp by logging and removing 451 trees was rejected by Jakarta residents. Jakarta Administration will redesign the Sudirman-Thamrin area to welcome the Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta.
Giri Anggana, an online motorcycle taxi (ojek) driver who works around the Sudirman area, behind the Atma Jaya campus, Semanggi, disagrees if 451 trees in Sudirman-Thamrin would be cut down or moved. "I hope it won't be realized because it will [make the road] less green," said Giri.

Jeihan, a student at Atma Jaya University, complains about the same thing. "I think if the trees are cut down, it can give a bad psychological effect for the environment," she said.
Jakarta Administration has confirmed that only the old trees with fragile trunks which will be cut down. Meanwhile, the trees that are still in a good condition will be removed to another place.

“The plan is to move it to RPTRA Kalijodo, to BMW Park and reserve in open space at Jalan Tipar Cakung road,” said Head of Forestry Division at the Jakarta Forest and Cemetery Department, Jaja Suarja.
The sidewalk arrangement along Sudirman-Thamrin is targeted to complete in July or before the Asian Games 2018. The revamp will include widening the sidewalk and adding lanes for motorcycles and buses.
