TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - After it was reported that minimart employees receive higher wages compared to bank employees, dozens of bank employees that are joined in the banking workers union communication network (SP Perbankan) held a rally at Jakarta’s Manpower Agency at Central Jakarta today.

The rally that will be joined by 16 workers union is planned to be held at Jakarta’s City Hall is to demand a higher sectorial pay (UMS) for bank employees. Chairman of the workers union from Bank Danamon Indonesia Abdoel Mujib said that they will focus on demanding the UMS to be raised by 30 percent.

Abdoel reminded that the rally is a warning for the wage council to raise the wages for bank employees.

“Don’t make us go on strike like what factory workers have done. It would cause a systemic risk or domino effect that can affect the whole company,” said Abdoel at the location of the rally.

He then compared the pay of bank employees with employees working in the retail business. The UMS in Depok for workers in the bank services industry and trade service industry is decided to be paid Rp3.69million per month. That is a lower number compared to wages for workers in the modern market, supermarket, and hypermarket sectors that get paid Rp3.98million each month.

Abdoel then compared the finance data parameter comparing the contribution of workers in the banking industry and employees in the retail industry. According to the records from www.sahamonline.id, worker’s contribution to the banking industry’s loss or profit is 27.53 percent. Meanwhile, the contribution of retail companies is 0.34 percent.

“This means that the wage bank employees receive are pitiful. Even though we have higher qualifications, educational backgrounds, competence, and risks compared to retail workers,” said Abdoel.

There are around 400 people from several other workers union that will join the rally, such as workers union from Bank Danamon, Permata, Maybank Syariah, Ganesha, QNB Qatar, SBI, Shinhan, Maybank Perjuangan, NISP OCBC, CIMB Niaga, MNC, Citibank, Bank Oke Indonesia, and UOB Indonesia.
