TEMPO.CO, Pekanbaru - Religious Affairs Ministry`s Islamic Guidance Secretary Tarmizi Tohor mentioned that based on research, the potential of national zakat (alms) can reach Rp217 trillion, yet only Rp6 trillion is managed to collect annually.
"It means 98 percent of national zakat potentials are not yet collected, whereas Law No. 23 and Government Regulation (PP) No. 14 on Zakat Management have stipulated sharia compliance, so it needs further improvement," Tarmizi Tohor said in Pekanbaru on Friday, February 23.

He explained that sharia compliance of zakat managing institutions must not only in line with administration finance management but also with sharia law and religious rules since alms is believed to be able to eradicate poverty.
He went on by saying that productive zakat management needs to be carried out by National Zakat Agency (BAZNAS) and Zakat Receiving Institution (LAZ).
