TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Police`s Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) cybercrime team stated that there are two ways for consumers to report cases of online scams.

“[Consumers can] either go online through an email or come to us in person to file a report,” said Silvester Simamora, Deputy Chief of Bareskrim’s e-commerce task force on Wednesday, February 21.

“We accommodate the complaints from every region in the country, so we cannot confirm how long [it would be processed],” he said. Most scams were practiced in social media such as Facebook and Instagram, as well as online marketplaces.

Faced with the fact that they have received overwhelming complaints from the public, Silvester, therefore, urged people to be more careful whenever they conduct online transactions.

Following widespread cases of online scamming drove Bareskrim to form the e-commerce task force that is led by Sr. Comr. Asep Syarifuddin.

The task force, according to Asep, has partnered with several entities such as the Financial Services Authority (OJK), financial technology (fintech) association, and the Digital Economic Association.

The number of online crimes from e-commerce scams from September to December generated loss valued up to Rp2.2 billion.
