TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Sinabung in Karo Regency, North Sumatra erupted in quite large force on Monday morning, at 08:53 pm local time.
Observer of Mount Sinabung Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center (PVMBG) M Nurul Saori said the eruption on Monday morning was greater than previous eruptions. After the big eruption, Mount Sinabung was followed by some subsequent eruptions with lower frequency.
The first eruption bursts of hot clouds up to 5,000 meters. "The measuring tool went error because it was high enough [eruption]," he said. The clouds spread up to 4.9 km to the south and reached 3.5 km to the east and southeast. Volcanic dust was observed flying to the west as the wind blow direction at that time.
Although the eruptions are quite large, PVMBG does not note the addition of refugees, including victims. "The situation is still safe because the area has been sterile," said Nurul Asrori.
Since it has been set up in alert status or level 4 on June 2, 2015, the activity of Mount Sinabung remains high. The ongoing eruption causes the disaster-prone areas to expand and some villages should not be occupied again. A total of 3,331 families had to be relocated.
