TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Maritime Affairs Coordinating Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan believed that Indonesia can serve as a counterweight to China. The reason is, he stated, other countries consider Indonesia the only force in the region that is capable of doing so.

"Indonesia is the only force that can serve as counterweight toward China and at the same time as the most beneficial business partner for both sides,” Luhut said on Thursday, Feb. 15.

Luhut explained that Indonesia has to maintain good diplomacy with and accept investments from any countries. "We often forget that Indonesia is a big country and its economy will place the world’s fifth in 2030," he said.

Luhut suggested that Indonesia should begin running more aggressive foreign politics. "Ambassadors in office must explain to the world that Indonesia plays an important role in global economy, especially in Asia-Pacific region," he went on.
