TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) received 38 reports regarding the side effect caused by the use of Albothyl to treat mouth sores in the past two years.
The common complaint was that Albothyl had actually enlarged their mouth sores which then led to infections.
“In the last two years, BPOM received 38 reports from health professionals who accepted patient’s complaints regarding the use of Albothyl as a treatment for mouth sores,” said BPOM in its official release on Thursday, February 15.
Albothyl is a drug sold in the Indonesian market as an external medication that contains policresulen concentrate. It is used as a hemostatic and antiseptic during a surgery, used on skin, teeth, to treat mouth sores, as well as ear, nose, and throat treatment.
A research with a clinical and university pharmacologist said that Albothyl should not be used as a hemostatic and antiseptic. “And it isn’t allowed to be used on the skin, ears, nose, and throat, mouth sores, and teeth,” BPOM wrote.
BPOM has also revoked its sales permit until there are further indications that can be agreed on.
The agency suggests that people who are used to using Albothyl to treat mouth sores should use an alternative brand that may contain benzydamine HCl, one percent povidone iodine, or the combination of dequalinium chloride and vitamin c.
