TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned fishery company Perum Perindo director Risyanto Suamda stated the policy of banning foreign-flagged vessels in Indonesian waters has benefited the company. This is the case since their fishing boats can catch fish in areas previously claimed by foreign vessels. The areas include Tual in Maluku, Sorong in West Papua and Arafura Sea.
“With the foreign vessels gone, we can catch fish in the areas,” Risyanto said on Friday, Jan. 19.
Risyanto explained that the policy implemented by Maritime and Fisheries Ministry (KKP) results in more stable fish growth and flourishing fish population.

Furthermore, Risyanto added, since the policy implemented in 2014, Perum Perindo has achieved higher results. They currently manage six fishery harbors in Pekalongan, Belawan, Parigi and Brondong.
Risyanto expects the potential of fishery industry can be further developed. He also calls for synergy among the Ministry, state-owned companies and private sector “to boost efficiency in logistics costs, the volume of production and the quality of fishery products," he went on.
