TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As of Wednesday, January 17, state-owned airliner Garuda Indonesia officially introduced the competitively priced Makassar-Palembang direct flight.
“Alhamdulillah (All praise to God) the weather was good enough for us to conduct the inaugural flight from Makassar to Palembang this evening,” said Garuda Indonesia’s Domestic Region IV Vice President I Wayan Suptrayasa in Makassar on Wednesday, January 17.
The GA274 flight from Makassar carried 17 passengers, while the flight from Palembang to Makassar carried 60 passengers in its maiden direct flight route.
The majority of passengers on the flight to Makassar were travelers destined for Indonesia’s renowned tourist attraction in South Sulawesi, Tana Toraja.
One of the passengers of the Garuda Indonesia flight from Makassar to Palembang was the Jakabaring Sports City President Director Esti Adnan. She said the airliner’s latest flight that doesn’t need to transit in Jakarta anymore is time and cost efficient.
“I am really grateful that there’s a Makassar-Palembang direct flight. This will be an economic opportunity for both regions,” she said.
Esti said that the Garuda Indonesia flight will enable the public to attend the 2018 Asian Games events that will be held in Palembang in August with a less expensive cost. According to another passenger, Rahma, the flight would cost roughly around Rp1.1 million, a significant price-cut compared to its previous two transit flights that would cost more than Rp2 million.
