TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Development Planning Board (Bappenas) Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro recently underlined the fact that effects of climate change are too real to deny. Tropical countries are predicted to be affected the worst by the phenomenon.

“Indonesia is one of the many tropical countries that is vulnerable to the climate change impacts,” said Bambang today on Tuesday, January 16.

Based on a study conducted by an international agency, Bambang said that climate change is reflected by the planet’s ever-climbing temperature. During the past several years, earth’s temperature increased 0.8 degrees Celsius. It is predicted to continue rising to the level of 1.8-4 degrees Celsius compared to the average temperature of earth from 1980 to 1999, which is a 2.5-4.7 degree Celsius pre-industrial revolution.

Bambang explained that the government has acted upon the impending threat in every aspect of people's lives. The government is rehabilitating lands and peatlands, as well as establishing urban jungles.

In the energy sector, the government is developing multiple renewable energy sources. The use of fossil fuels is slowly decreasing while the development and management of sustainable mass transportations are ongoing.

The government is also developing green technologies in the industrial sector, eradicating materials that threaten the ozone layer, developing waste banks, and developing waste treatment plants (IPAL). Bambang also urged industries to adopt the reuse, reduce, and recycle wastes (3-R) program.
