TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Following the rescue of two hikers who were lost at Mount Merapi, Head of Mount Merapi National Park Office Suwiknya shared five things you should do to avoid getting lost when hiking at Mount Merapi or others.
1. Basic personal survival items
Make sure that you take with you enough supplies for your logistical needs such as food and hydrations. Always bring extra thick jackets and personal medicines if you have any history of sickness.
2. Fill the form
Before you start your hiking journey, you must fill the form provided by local officials such as the Mount Merapi National Park Office (BTNGM) at the the Search and Rescue Barameru basecamp.
3. Do not panic and keep close
Do not panic when you are faced with thick fogs. Stay close to your group if you are traveling in one. Stay together when you or members of your group need to rest. If something urgent happens, immediately contact the basecamp so that authorities can take action.
4. A rope to connect the group
Holding on to a rope can be very useful to maintain the integrity of your group. “The lane contour of Mount Merapi is pretty steep and each hiker has different abilities, it is important not to get separated,” said Suwiknya.
5. Use mobile phone power banks
Even though you will not receive internet connection at the peak of Mount Merapi, a power bank is proven to be useful to power your mobile phone in the case you are lost.
