TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A study conducted by a team of scientists from Hiroshima University in Japan found that eating fast or in haste poses a risk of metabolic syndrome.
Metabolic syndrome refers to a group of health problems or conditions that causes diabetes, obesity or heart disease.
The team concluded that eating in haste is related to factors of unhealthy weight gain, high blood pressure, and unstable rate of blood glucose.
This study also revealed that spending more time to chew and swallow food properly buys the brain time to process the feeling of a full stomach and provides an early signal to stop eating and prevent overeating.
This study involved 642 males and 441 females with the average age of 51.2 years old. Not a single of them suffered from metabolic syndrome at the beginning of the study in 2008.
The following are the benefits of eating slowly:
1. Reducing appetite
Eating slowly helps reduce appetite. The brain requires 15-20 minutes to send out a signal of a full stomach. This way we eat less and our appetite automatically reduces.
2. Better digestion
When you chew food properly, it will be easily digested. If you eat in haste, you swallow the food wholly. As a result, your body will not absorb the vitamins, minerals, and amino acid. When you eat slowly, food will be digested efficiently and fast.
3. Weight control
Eating slowly and chewing properly helps to control the size of the portion and body weight.
4. Preventing gastritis acid
Eating in haste without properly chewing the food can result in severe gastritis and acidity due to not properly digest the food.
