TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Malaysia-based ride-hailing company Grab claims that GrabHitch Bike has reduced pollution and congestion in Jakarta in the past year.
Grab Indonesia Marketing Director Mediko Azwar said that Jakarta has a low car ownership but motorcycle ownership remain high, making it a promising market for bike-pooling compared to car-pooling.
“Motorcycles can move through congested traffic, something that can’t be done by cars,” he said in a press release received by Tempo on October 19.

GrabHitch Bike is a service that matches drivers who commute to work daily with passengers who are going in the same direction, so that they can travel together.
Allowing commuters to share rides, the service has also helped reduce the movement of 1,057 motorcycles into Jakarta per day and 1.6 million kilograms of carbon emission per year.
The carbon emission is equal to the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) produced by table lamps for 4,500 children to study for a full day in a whole year.
In other words, the service has contributed to reducing congestion and promoting green living.
“As Indonesians foster a habit of sharing rides with their friends, we believe that there is a huge opportunity to improve transportation quality in the city by sharing the roads, motorcycles and rides,” he said.
Considering the positive contribution, Mediko said, Grab is committed to continue promoting the bike-pooling concept and help commuters who live on the outskirts of Jakarta and people in general.
