VP Jusuf Kalla: No Urgency for Anti-corruption Special Detachment

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Jusuf Kalla considers the formation of an Anti-corruption Special Detachment by the National Police is not yet necessary. He argues that the number of corruption cases in the National Police's internal management is not small.

“Just let the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) focus on that task, they should be assisted,” said VP Jusuf Kalla on Tuesday, October 17.

Kalla says an Anticorruption Special Detachment will possibly add extra pressure towards state officials. The fear, he argues, would potentially affect the decision making among the state officials.

Jusuf Kalla mentions that it is important to be objective in eradicating corruption. “KPK is enough for now. Police can continue to work together with the attorney general’s office to perform their tasks. There's no need a new team to do that job.”

The statement issued by VP Jusuf Kalla is a contrast to the statement of Presidential Spokesman Johan Budi Sapto Prabowo who says that an anti-corruption unit within the Police force should not be a problem and that the concept corroborates with President Jokowi’s view on eradicating corruption.

"If this anticorruption special unit could synergize optimally with KPK and the attorney general’s office, I don’t think that it needs to be questioned,” Johan Budi said Tuesday.
