TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Simalungun district administration of North Sumatera keeps on trying to make ulos or hio (Batak traditional fabric) to earn recognition as world heritage by UNESCO.
"We will carry out improvement including providing materials and facilitating ulos weavers," Simalungun Regent JR Saragih said in Ulos or Hio day in Pantai Bebas, Parapat, Lake Toba, on Saturday (14/10).
Simalungun district administration is ready to take in 50 ulos weavers and to provide a 10-hectare land on rest area in Purba regency. "Follow-up actions need to be taken, do not make weavers dream, but give weavers hope to live," JR Saraginh stated.
To comply UNESCO regulation, at least a 10-hectare land for materials is required to make local culture recognized as world heritage.
Ulos has been established as national culture heritage of non-object on October 17, 2014 with register number 0010000708. This becomes a momentum to preserve ulos and a step further to gain world recognition.
