TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The import of weapons by the National Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) have indications of irregularities and suspected procedural violations. The lethal combat weapons brought in from Arsenal, Bulgaria, were not authorized by the Minister of Defense. Their procurement transpired rapidly, right after a contract was finalized. Some other procedural violations also occurred.
National Police Chief Gen. Tito Karnavian continues to avoid requests to clarify the disputes surrounding the procurement of these weapons. Citing a busy schedule, he canceled an interview scheduled with Tempo last week. He then turned over clarification duties to the Chief of the National Police Public Relations Division, Insp. Gen. Setyo Wasisto. Setyo was willing to meet but asked that his statements not be quoted.
