TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Wayang golek performances depicting the classic epics of Mahabarata and Ramayana were shown at the 2017 World Puppet Festival in Charleville-Mézières Ardennes in France. The Sundanese Arts Foundation of Golek Putra Giri Harja 3 (PGH3) operated the puppets in the festival that was held from September 16 to 24.
The PGH3 is also scheduled to perform in Lyon on September 27 and 28.
Surya Rosa Putra, the education attache of the Indonesian Embassy in Paris, said that the biannual puppet festival is the biggest in Europe. It has been held since 1961 with hundreds of thousands of attendees flocking from all parts of the globe.
This year is Indonesia's first time taking part in the festival.
The event organizer's director Anne-Francois Cabanis said that this year's festival will have 400 performers from 25 nations.
Anne said that the organizers' committee and the audience were mesmerized by the wayang golek performance.
