Flights in Bali Normal Despite Mt. Agung Highest Alert Status

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Flights in Bali are still running normal despite the fact that Mt. Agung in Karangasem, Bali, has the highest alert status (level IV or awas). "The flights today are normal," Transportation Ministry’s air transport directorate general spokesperson Agus Soebagio said on Sunday (24/9).
Agus explained that until today, there has not been any signs that Ngurah Rai International Airport will closes down due to Mt. Agung volcanic activity. "We pray that it won’t (be closed down)," he added.
On Friday evening (22/9), the Center of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) announced that the status of Mt. Agung has reached the highest level. With such an announcement, the danger zone expands.
Air Transportation Directorate General has held a meeting with stakeholders and airport operator on Saturday (23/9). The meeting discussed mitigation measures to ensure the safety of national flights in the event of Mt. Agung eruption.
