TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Semarang residents feast on tumpeng (cone-shaped rice dish) in celebration of 1 Muharram 1439 H (Islamic New Year) in an event called Kembul bujana. As many as 150 tumpengs and side dishes were presented at the Semarang City Hall, Central Java on Wednesday night, September 21.
It was the second Kembul bujana event held in celebration of 1 Muharram after last year’s edition in Simpang Lima roundabout. People who attended the event were sitting around tumpengs and praying for a better life in the new year.
Semarang Mayor Hendrar Prihadi said that kembul bujana represents equality regardless of backgrounds. “All are sitting together to enjoy tumpeng rice. To build Semarang, eliminate all differences, let’s do it together,” he said.
Hendi expects Semarang residents to no longer talk about personal gains, but public interest to make the city grow, better and greater.
“Don’t only think about ‘wis nge’i’ [what the city can do] ‘karo’ [for] me, but ‘wis nge’i’ apa kanggo [what can I do for] Semarang City. To build a city, a lot of helping hands would be needed,” he concluded.
The Islamic New Year 1 Muharram 1439 H celebration in Semarang City also featured shadow puppet theater (wayang kulit) played by puppet master Ki Anom Dwijo Kangko titled “Anoman Maneges” and comedy show by Marwoto.
