TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said that water potential in Papua and West Papua is greater than that of other regions in Indonesia. “Because they have the highest rainfall. We are prioritizing water resource management in Papua to build a small irrigation network to support agriculture,” he said in a press release issued on September 11.

The Public Works Ministry continues to step up the development and rehabilitation of dams, as well as irrigation networks in the two provinces to support food self-sufficiency, Basuki said. Water supply will be provided by building Wanggar and Nuhoa Dams in Nabire Regency, Papua Province.

Wanggar Dam will supply water to 3,200 hectares of land at a discharge rate of 2,582 cubic meters per second. The construction project will cost up to Rp435 billion.

Meanwhile, Nuhoa Dam will supply water to 2,000 hectares of land. The Rp21.3 billion project that started in 2012 will be completed by the end of the year.

The Public Works Ministry has earlier built a dam in Yahukimo Regency in Papua to supply water to 3,200 hectares of farm land. The project was developed from 2012 to 2016 costing Rp109.8 billion.

In Nabire, the government is working to complete the left intake channel of Kalibumi Dam costing Rp138.3 billion. The dam will supply water to 6,400 hectares of land.

In Yapsi District, Jayapura Regency, an irrigation channel supplies water to 2,119 hectares of land from Lereh II Dam.

West Papua Riparian Area Center (BWS) is also constructing Wariori and Aimasi Dams in Manokwari Regency. Wariori Dam will supply water to 3,450 hectares of land and Aimasi Dam will supply water to 1,700 hectares of land.

A dam in South Manokwari Regency is also being built to supply water to 3,016 hectares of land. Some 700 hectares of farm land belonging to 450 farmers have already received benefit from the irrigation dam.
