TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Surabaya administration will move slum dwellers to low cost apartments.
Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini said that there are currently around 3,000 head of household on the waiting list to occupy the apartments.
“This year the city administration has built a block of low cost apartments,” she said today in Surabaya.
Next year, she went on, five blocks of low cost apartments will be built using Surabaya 2018 regional budget in the homeless housing project.

“It will take time. If we don’t build low cost apartments, where would they be moved?” she said.
She said that a lot of residents are still on the waiting list because the city administration will prioritize relocation of riverbank dwellers to address flooding.
Risma added that aside from a limited number of apartments, the efforts to clean up slums have been hampered by the unwillingness of residents to move to the low cost apartments. Nonetheless, Risma is confident that Surabaya will be slum free in the future. Surabaya Regional Representatives Council (DPRD) Slum Management special committee chairman Budi Leksono said that the city administration has to manage around 150 hectares of slums on government land and riverbanks.
