TEMPO.CO, Singapore - Ten United States Marine sailors reportedly went missing and five were injured after USS John S. McCain collided with merchant ship Alnic MC over Singaporean waters on Monday, August 21.
The US Navy stated that the USS John S. McCain collided with the merchant vessel while the US Navy destroyer was on its way to dock at a harbor in Singapore. The incident took place at 05:24 AM local times.
It was reported that USS John S. McCain suffered damage to its port side. A search and rescue team, in collaboration with a Singaporean search and rescue team, has been deployed to find the missing sailors.
The USS John S. McCain has a length of 145 meters with a total payload of 9,000 tons. Meanwhile, merchant ship Alnin MC, which carried a Libyan flag, is a 183-meter-long vessel that was carrying a 30,000-ton payload which mostly consists of oil.
This marks the second incident in the Pacific seas during the last three months involving a US Navy destroyer. The previous incident on June 17 involved USS Fitzgerald that collided with a Japanese merchant ship at the Japanese offshore killing seven US sailors.
