TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ade Irawan, a lumber truck driver in Kalimantan who became a victim of extortion by a police officer, was awarded a charter and an Android-based smartphone after the video he secretly recorded with his mobile phone went viral.
South Kalimantan Police Chief Brig. Gen. Rachmat Mulyana personally handed over the award. Rachmat said that appreciates what Ade had done by recording the incident and promised to further investigate the police-extortion case.
“I have my utmost respect towards Ade who was brave enough to uncover the practice with strong and concrete evidence. Especially in the era of transparency, as a leader of a Police institution, I will not protect any individual who gives the [police] institution a bad name,” said Rachmat Mulyana today.
Ade Iriawan admits that he did not initially plan to record the extortion, but finally chose to do so after he became fed-up by the extortion conducted by multiple policemen at the region. Ade said that he passed through several posts throughout his route and was continuously extorted even though he had valid permits to carry his payload.
