Indonesia Reviews UN Recommendations on LBGT, Death Penalty

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Dicky Komar, Director of Human Rights and Humanity, the Foreign Ministry, said that his office is still reviewing 75 recommendations issued by the UN Human Rights Council at the universal periodic review (UPR) this year, including the one related to LGBT.
Out of 225 recommendations, the government has accepted 150 of them including on education, freedom of religion and protection for vulnerable groups and the disabled.
Dicky said that the 75 recommendations also include controversial issues, such as LBGT community, caning and death penalty.

Dicky said that his office will cooperate with relevant agencies to discuss the recommendations. He could not confirm how many of them will be accepted or acknowledged.
According to Dicky, UN Human Rights Council recommendations may be acknowledged if they are against the government policies.
The UPR recommendations are issued on a five-year basis.
The government will be discussing the recommendations for 2 months before taking a stance. Dicky said the UN Human Rights Council has given until September 20-21 for the government to make any decision on the 75 recommendations that also includes recommendations on LGBT and death penalty.
