Insp. Gen. Idham Azis (Antara)

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Inspector General Idham Azis, the cop who helped killed Malaysian top terrorist Dr. Azhari in 2005, has been named Jakarta police chief.

Police Chief Tito Karnavian has made changes in strategic positions in the department by issuing a secret telegram dated July 20. Former Jakarta Metro Police chief Inspector Mochammad Iriawan has been moved to a new position: the National Police Operations Assistant.

Inspector General Idham Azhis previously served as the head of the Police Profession and Security Division (Propam). “It’s a regular transfer. ‘Tour of duty’ and ‘tour of area’,” police spokesman Setyo Wasisto told Tempo yesterday, July 20.

Idham Azis is not new to Jakarta Metro Police. In 2009, he served as General Crime Investigator Unit director for a year. He earlier worked as West Jakarta Police chief from 2008 to 2009.

Idham Azis was renowned for his role in arresting terrorists during his term at the counterterrorism unit Densus 88. In 2005, serving as Densus Investigation Sub Detachment Unit head, he helped kill terrorist Dr. Azhari in Batu, Malang.

In 2010, he was appointed Densus 88 deputy head before being named Central Sulawesi Police chief in 2014.

Idham was born in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi on January 30, 1963. He graduated from Police Academy in 1988, as Police Chief Tito Karnavian did. Before being named Jakarta Police chief, he served as the National Police Profession and Security Division head.
