TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat and Jakarta Police chief Mochamad Iriawan have called on Jakarta residents not to celebrate takbiran (the eve of Eid al-Fitr) by driving around the city.
“I hope people will celebrate takbiran in their own neighborhood, at mosques or government offices,” Djarot said at the City Hall in Jakarta on Tuesday, June 20.
According to Djarot, the Jakarta administration will hold takbiran on June 24, and a drum festival at district levels. Winners of the competition will participate in a festival held at the city level on June 21, 2017.
Each winner will later represent their administrative city at a drum festival held on June 24. The festival will be held to welcome the Eid al-Fitr Holiday and commemorate the 490th anniversary of Jakarta.
Djarot revealed that the festival was aimed at preventing accidents and conflicts that frequently occur during takbiran convoys.
“We’re celebrating the Eid al-Fitr Holiday. It’s a victory day for all of us who conducted fasting,” Djarot said.
