TEMPO.CO, Bekasi - Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors Corp. on April 25 opened a new assembly plant in Karawang, Bekasi regency. The plant, which cost ¥65 billion to build, has a production capacity of 160,000 vehicles a year and will employ 3,000 workers.
President Joko Widodo and Industry Minister Airlangga Hartanto attended the launching ceremony with Mitsubishi Motor's chairman Carlos Ghosn and CEO Osamu Masuko.
The plant will reinforce the Japanese automaker's position in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

"We have the capacity to make more than 600,000 vehicles total in the ASEAN market," Osamu Masuko said.
The new plant in Karawang is part of Mitsubishi's business strategy in the Southeast Asian region. The company also produces vehicles in Thailand and the Philippines. The expansion plan is supported by Nissan, which has 34 percent share in Mitsubishi Motors.
"This plant is a representation of our confidence in Indonesia, in ASEAN, and in Mitsubishi Motors' development prospect. We are proud to be able to contribute to creating jobs and investing in one of the biggest economies, which will serve as a strong base for production and export for our growing alliance," Ghosn said.
