TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Jusuf Kalla yesterday, March 21, received a Peacemaker title from Rajamangala University of Technology Isan, Thailand. He was given the nickname because Jusuf Kalla, also known as JK, has heavily contributed to Asia’s conflict resolution.
“Jusuf Kalla’s contribution and dedication are not only known in Indonesia. He is also an internationally acclaimed peacemaker,” said Chalempon Yungklang, the Vice President of Academic and Education Quality at the Rajamangala University of Technology Isan, on Tuesday, March 21, 2017. As a gesture of appreciation, the University granted Jusuf Kalla with the Honorary Doctorate degree.

According to Chalempon, to call Jusuf Kalla as peacemaker is not an exaggeration. They consider, besides being an active politician and a businessman, Kalla still has the time to get himself involved in a number of activities in maintaining peace.
One of the examples, Chalempon said, is the handling of Aceh uprising throughout 1976 to 2005. Based on the study in the University, JK played a major role in its resolution as a negotiator.
The vice president also played a role in putting an end to Poso’s religious conflict. He succeeded in bringing in a win-win solution for the parties involved. “Jusuf Kalla is also active in contributing to the Asian Peace and Reconciliation Council (APRC). It’s agreed by the members that JK should continue to provide his views and suggestions, especially regarding the South China Sea conflict,” Chalempon said.
JK appreciates the honorary doctorate degree and accolades given to him. He considers it an acknowledgment for his efforts as Indonesia’s representative in maintaining peace. “It’s an appreciation for what we have done so far,” said Jusuf Kalla.
