TEMPO.CO, Denpasar - The Bali Police are ready to deploy some 5,600 officers to secure the series Hindu celebrations in welcoming Nyepi Day for the Caka New Year 1939.
Nyepi is the Balinese "Day of Silence" commemorated every Saka new year, which falls on the last week of March in 2017 AD.
Bali Police Chief Insp. Gen. Petrus Golose said on Thursday that the police will be assisted approximately 22,000 pecalang or Bali's traditional security men to secure the series of Nyepi rituals all across Bali from March 23 to 29.
Petrus Golose asks the public to participate in maintaining order and security in the island prior and during the Hindu New Year's, given the sacredness a holiness of that day.
At the time of Nyepi, the Hindus are restricted from doing four things: Amati Geni, which means no fire or light—including electricity; Amati Karya (no working); Amati Lelunganan (no traveling); and Amati Lelanguan (no eating and no revelry/self-entertainment).
During the day, only a few establishments are allowed to open for limited hours, including hospitals, police departments, and fire departments. Their building must not have lights outside.
