TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Yunus S. Suwarinoto said that an increase in precipitation is expected to occur for the rest of the week in Jakarta. Heavy rainfall hit the capital city yesterday due to the convergence of wind over Jakarta area, particularly on the north side.
Rain clouds were formed following the phenomenon, marked with growing number of cumulonimbus clouds. “Cumulonimbus clouds activity has resulted in heavy rainfall with thunder and lightning,”
The BMKG noted Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi were yesterday hit by a rather mild and heavy rain with an intensity of 20-100 millimeters per day. The highest precipitation was experienced by Kemayoran in Central Jakarta and Kelapa Gading in North Jakarta at 180 millimeters per day and 145.4 millimeters per day.
According to Yunus, the high intensity of rainfall is normal because other regions across Indonesia are experiencing the same. However, rainfall is expected to increase in February compared to February 2016.
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said that Jakarta saw less precipitation amount yesterday compared to 2007, 2013 and 2014 that led to flooding with an intensity of 200-350 meter per day. “The intensity is not too high so far,”
