TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister Abdurrahman Fachir expressed optimism that Indonesia will have an access to see Siti Aisyah, who allegedly was involved in the killing of Kim Jong-nam, after the Malaysian Police conducted the interrogation. Based on the regulation on the interrogation that lasts for a week, the access should be granted on February 22, 2017.
"Our lawyer has been in communications with investigators. We’ll see tomorrow. I’m optimistic that the access will be granted tomorrow," Fachir said at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday, February 21, 2017.
Earlier, Siti was arrested by Malaysian authorities for allegedly being involved in the assassination of Kim Jong-Nam, the estranged half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Kim was allegedly assassinated at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Wednesday, last week. Siti was arrested after local authorities identified her using surveillance video.
Since Siti was arrested, the Indonesian government has not yet gained access to Siti. Siti is still undergoing a probe in the State of Selangor.
Fachir ensured that the government will strive to provide legal aid for Siti. Fachir revealed that Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi has met Malaysian Foreign Affairs Minister in Philippine this week.
"Malaysia definitely needs Indonesia in so many things, such as information and data. One way or another, a communication has to be established," Fachir said.
However, Fachir pointed out that Indonesia would respect laws applied in Malaysia.
