TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Protesters have been marching towards the House of Representatives (DPR) building in Senayan, Jakarta, for the so-called 212 rally today, February 21, 2017. The rally will be staged to demand Home Affairs Minister to suspend Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama alias Ahok for becoming a defendant in a blasphemy case.
The initiators of the rally are the Islamic Ummah Forum (FUI) and student organizations of Jakarta State University (UNJ), Jakarta Muhammadiyah University (UMJ) and Prof. Hamka University.
Protesters have gathered in front of the DPR building since 8 am and started giving speeches a half an hour later, Antara said.
Earlier, the FUI secretary-general Muhammad Al-Khatthath met with the DPR leadership yesterday to inform them about today’s rally.
Al-Khatthath said that Ahok’s reinstatement was against Law No. 23/2014 on Regional Government because the person in question is a defendant in an ongoing blasphemy trial.
