TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Members of the Indonesian Expert Council of Trade Unions Association (ASPEK) Kun Wardana Abyoto, stated that the digital age will produce a higher rate of unemployment because the number of jobs created are smaller compared to new jobs.
"[The International Labour Organization] statistics stated that there are [a number of] jobs that are missing parallel to the digital [revolution], and it created new jobs although there is a large gap in between, and will certainly create more unemployment. We must look ahead, if we wait for it to happen, [we would] be left behind," Kun said during a national Seminar that was held on Monday, February 20, 2017.
Kun said that according to an observation by the International Labor Organization, digital technology will tend to dominate every field of work. Kun added that technology revolution has happened four times in the past, the first was the invention of the steam engine, followed by electricity, computers, and the digital revolution.
Meanwhile, the link between the effects of digital age and the number of unemployment is caused by companies that have implemented automation and robots in their production stage. The labor union together with the government must be able to identify the phenomena together with preparing steps to anticipate increasing unemployment.
