TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Political analyst from Universitas Indonesia Donny Gahral Adiansyahresponded to the current public expectation upon a meeting that should take place between President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Former President Susilo “SBY” Bambang Yudhoyono, who also serves as the Chairman of the Democratic Party.
“The meeting isnt necessary, since the public would see it as if SBY is negotiating with Jokowi for a short term political interest,” Donny told Tempo on Monday, January 23, 2017.
Donny viewed that, from the scale of 1-10, the current political condition is at 8.5. “It’s still condusive,” he said. Donny went on saying that a meeting between Jokowi and SBY will not help with the heated situation. “The political temperature will continue to heat up until mid-2017, with or without the meeting between Jokowi and SBY,” Donny predicted.
No one, according to Donny, should take the role as a mediator in arranging a meeting between the two of them. Donny suggested that political communications between the two should be mediated only by the media, either the mainstream media or social media. “This is an advanced level of political communication that doesn’t need to be “polished” by an informal meeting.”
“Jokowi should just focus on non-state political powers that are being controlled by formal political players which could get wild and uncontrolled, such as labors, university students, and ulemas, for examples,” Donny said.
Donny viewed that SBY has an agenda in the future political career of his son. “Meanwhile other actors have an agenda for themselves,” Donny said.
