President Jokowi Meets Kofi Annan, Discusses Rohingya Issue

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The plight of Rohingya people in Rakhine, Myanmar, has prompted President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to offer relief. Meeting with the Chairman of the Advisory Commission on Rakhine State Kofi Annan, President Joko Widodo asked for input on Rohingya issue.
“I had instructed Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi to visit Myanmar last week to discuss and report the situation in Rakhine State,” President Jokowi said at Bali International Convention Center, Westin Hotel, Bali, on Thursday, December 8, 2016.
The President said that Mr. Annan gave him a lot of inputs. Mr. Annan suggested Jokowi to primarily send logistics assistance, namely food and sleeping mats.
Based on Mr. Annan’s input and report from the visit to Rakhine State, the two assistances are needed the most by Rohingya people. “Those are what needed the most. More relief will be provided, such as construction of school buildings,” President Jokowi said.
Lastly, President Jokowi said that Mr. Annan appreciates Indonesia for the measures taken to help Rohingya people. “The country with the largest Muslim population who directly met Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi,” he said.
