TEMPO.CO, JKupang - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) office in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), said that on Monday, December 5, a tectonic earthquake shook the East Flores regency and its surrounding areas.
According to Kupang BMKG spokesman Sumawan, the agency's analysis showed that the earthquake happened on 09:13 local time. The quake's magnitude was 6.4 on the Richter scale.
The earthquake's epicenter is at 7.32 South Latitude and 123.40 East Longitude, at a depth of 524 kilometers. Judging from the depth of its hypocenter, the earthquake was likely caused by a local fracture.
BMKG's shake map also showed that the quake reached Waingapu, Tambolaka, with an intensity scale of II SIG-BMKG or (III-IV MMI).
There has been no report of damages caused by the earthquake, but authorities are asking locals to remain calm whilst waiting for their further instructions. So far, no aftershocks have been reported.
